Our Story
How I became a Bee Charmer
My first interest to be around bees was in high school watching the movie Ever After with Drew Barrymore. There is a very short scene where Drew’s character and one of the housekeepers are out in the bee yard collecting honey and wearing vintage veils. I thought to myself, “I want to wear one of those cool hats and stand close to bees one day.” There was just something about it that seemed so magical.
Years later, I saw the documentary More Than Honey and began to learn about the importance of bees and all that they do for us through pollination. The film explained that the bees were in danger of extinction and my Enneagram 2 self felt drawn to help. I learned more about bees any chance I got and began calling them friends. It would be several years still before I would become an actual beekeeper. I was sitting in an all-day beekeeping class and realized that I was as ready as I could be and needed to order my bees. I’ll never forget picking up my first bee packages and driving them home in my car with the air conditioning on full blast nervous that they would get agitated and try to escape their screened box to come up front and say hello.
Each year beekeeping is an adventure and there is always something new to learn. I love how bees live in community and share responsibilities. They teach me to be patient, to observe and to pay attention. There is a curiosity and playfulness about them as they dance to show each other where resources can be found and fly around showing interest in their environment.
I began to wonder how I could share my new love of beekeeping with others. Of course, the sweet sticky liquid gold, aka honey, is always a win with people. But, what I was learning from the bees made me think they had something special to offer to others. My life’s work has been in the nonprofit world and inviting others into partnership and community through service. It was natural for me to consider how to blend my heart for people and my passion for bees. I love teaching people about the important work that bees do for our world and the incredible way they function. My dream is to one day go a step further with the hope of offering employment and job/skill equipping to women who need a fresh start.
Welcome. I’m so glad you’re here.
