How bees see the world is fascinating!
Humans can see more colors but bees have a broader range. They can see ultraviolet light which allows them to see many patterns on flowers that are invisible to humans. This guides them to the flowers with nectar and allows them to pollinate with pinpoint accuracy. They are most drawn to purple, violet and blue; however they are unable to see red. Bees color vision is 5X faster than humans and the fastest in the animal world, which means they can distinguish colors while flying very fast.
Bees can also detect polarized light. This light moves in one direction and bees can use it as a navigation system. Then they communicate those directions to the other bees in the hive. Another day I’ll share with you about how they dance to show the others where the food is!
